Administrative Assistant – Full Time (Updated position description)
Washington County Humane Society (WCHS) seeks an Administrative Assistant with database expertise who is a self-starter and detail orientated.
Essential Functions & Responsibilities
• Database entry
• Registration for day camp, dog training, spay/neuter clinics, training room rentals, and events
• Schedule vehicle and building maintenance
• Run errands for administration
• Help answer phones and cover the front office as needed
• Handle various reports, office duties and related tasks
• Assist office manager, executive director and administrative staff with projects as needed
• Support fundraising team with event set-up, clean-up, work at, and other tasks for outreach events
• Support shelter operations as needed, including walking dogs
• Coordinate summer day camps
Preferred Qualifications
• Have a minimum of two years experience in data entry
• Respect the dignity and basic rights of animals
• Understand and be dedicated to the Washington County Humane Society’s mission, core values, core focus, philosophy and animal welfare programs (wchspets.org/media/about-wchs)
• Display emotional maturity and enjoy being a team player in a fast-paced, ever-changing environment
• Demonstrate attention to detail and strong communication and customer service skills
• Be a self-starter
• Possess strong oral, written and organizational skills
• Work independently with minimal supervision
• Demonstrate computer literacy and knowledge of spreadsheets and databases (fluency in Microsoft Office, Excel, Volgistics and DonorSnap is a plus)
• Animal welfare or working at a nonprofit organization a plus
Additional Details
The Administrative Assistant will work at WCHS’s animal shelter located on Hwy. 60 in the Town of Polk. The work environment is fast paced and the job demands patience, flexibility and empathy. Applicants must have exceptional customer service, communication and organization skills, database knowledge and computer related functions.
This is a full time/40 hour a week position. Hours are Monday through Friday and one Saturday a month from 8 a.m. to 6 p.m. The role starts at $16 per hour and offers other perks and benefits. Although this position does not include animal care, you may occasionally be exposed to zoonotic diseases, frightened, injured and aggressive animals. Working in animal welfare is emotionally demanding and often includes dealing with emotional constituencies, animal abuse and neglect situations, and conversations about euthanasia. WCHS does not euthanize for length of stay or space and its annual euthanasia rate is 3% annually.

Animal Caregiver – Full Time
As a WCHS animal caregiver, you will work alongside other animal care staff, surgical assistants, veterinarians, and administration staff striving to make a difference in the lives of the pets and community we serve. With the chance to utilize your experience with knowledge, communication skills, and love for animals, this role will afford you the opportunity to define a clear career path for continued growth and learning.
Essential Functions & Responsibilities
• Daily care and cleaning of animal housing and supplies
• Administering medication, including orally, topically, and subcutaneously
• Monitor daily health of animals in care
• Performing animal intake exams, including vaccinations
• Assisting the community with incoming stray animals
• Transporting animals to veterinary appointments
• Assisting with adoption counseling and adoption paperwork
• Assist with potty breaking dogs 3 times daily
• Additional duties as assigned
Preferred Qualifications
• Must be 18+ years of age
• High school diploma or GED
• Able to lift and carry up to 50 lbs repeatedly throughout the day
• Must have valid regular Wisconsin driver’s license with good driving record
• Excellent communication skills, be team oriented, and enjoy fast paced environment
• Candidates must be committed to treating animals with kindness and respect
Schedule
• 40 hours/week
• Full-time animal care staff will work four 10-hour days per week. Typical hours are 8:00am- 6:30pm or 10:00am-8:30pm
• Two Saturdays a month required (Saturday 8:00am-6:30pm & Sunday 8:00am-12:30pm and 4:00pm-5:30pm). End times and Sunday shifts are approximate depending on the number of animals in care

Certified Veterinary Technician
As a WCHS veterinary technician, you will work alongside an animal care team, surgical assistant, veterinarian, and administrative staff striving to make a difference in the lives of the pets and community we serve. Essential Functions & Responsibilities
- Prepare daily surgical schedule and set up surgical suite as needed
- Administer anesthesia, assist with surgical preparation, monitor animals under anesthesia, and provide post-operative care
- Accurately calculate drug dosages and properly handle, administer, and track controlled substances in compliance with regulations
- Verify medication slips for accuracy and completeness prior to preparation and administration
- Accurately enter medical data and treatment records into PetPoint database
- Perform dental prophylaxis procedures as directed
- Draw blood for various diagnostic tests; perform and analyze fecal floats, cytologies, and urinalyses
- Clean, maintain, and sterilize medical equipment, surgical suite, and animal care areas as needed
- Complete all required documentation and medical records promptly and accurately
- Administer medications as prescribed by veterinarians
- Monitor and document the daily health status of animals under care, reporting any concerns promptly
- Perform outgoing health checks prior to adoption
- Maintain accurate and up-to-date medical records for all animals in care
- Assist care staff with cleaning kennels as needed
- Assist care staff with providing bathroom breaks for dogs as needed
- Perform additional duties as assigned
Preferred Qualifications
• Veterinary Technician Certification required
• Able to lift and carry up to 50lbs
