Care Staff Manager

The Washington County Humane Society (WCHS) seeks a full-time (30 or more hours per week), salaried Care Staff Manager who will manage a pool of dedicated animal caregivers. This role is responsible for scheduling and overseeing care staff as well as assist in many related shelter functions.

About the Role
In addition to the primary duties, this position will meet regularly with the leadership team for planning and goal setting; oversee and make recommendations on a training curriculum, support other managers, and work with adopters and potential adopters. Candidates are comfortable with people of all ages and can balance relationship-building with the other important position functions. Monday and Wednesday evenings are required and a minimum of one Saturday a month.
 
This job demands a lot. Yet, the satisfaction of witnessing animals finding loving homes, and the camaraderie among staff and volunteers who have worked at the shelters for many years is heartwarming. You will come to know and love them. 
Compensation & Benefits

Pay range: $41,600 to $45,760 (based on 40 hours per week)

Essential Functions & Responsibilities
  • Oversee full-time and part-time animal caregivers with an interactive approach
  • Work with Training Coordinator to enhance an onboarding training program and implementation of a full training curriculum; make recommendations on professional development goals
  • Complete reviews according to the appropriate timeline for their role
  • Create monthly care staff schedule and weekly duties sheet
  • Co-lead monthly staff meetings and bi-weekly mini trainings
  • Organize staff outings and determine activities to improve the overall wellbeing of staff
  • Serve as Manager on Duty during the week and one Saturday per month
  • Each evening, shut-down the shelter, checking on each animal, with care staff
  • Oversee deep cleaning of animal wards in the shelter
  • Support staff and managers as needed with large animal transports, impounds, seizures and other animal related issues
  • Assist other managers as necessary and cover their roles as makes sense while they are out of the office
  • Support fundraising event set-up, execution and clean-up
  • Assist with social media posts
  • Join other managers and the executive director on the Leadership team
  • Assist with PetPoint expansion and training
Qualifications
  • Respect the dignity and basic rights of animals
  • Understand and be dedicated to Washington County Humane Society’s mission, core values, functions and culture
  • Display emotional maturity and enjoy being a team player in a fast-paced environment
  • Be a self-starter, work independently with minimal supervision
  • Navigate a fast-paced, demanding, ever-changing environment
  • Oversee and elevate a staff training program
  • Demonstrate attention to detail and strong communication and customer service skills
  • Work as a team player and collaborate
  • Bring a minimum of two years of experience in animal welfare, a nonprofit organization or a related position
  • Demonstrate computer literacy and knowledge of spreadsheets and databases. (Fluency in PetPoint is a plus).
  • Experience working in a veterinarian office or animal shelter with basic shelter medicine knowledge desired
Work Environment

The Manger will work in the newly rebuilt shelter located on State Road 60 between Jackson and Slinger. This position includes working with animals and you may occasionally be exposed to zoonotic diseases, frightened, injured and aggressive animals. Working in animal welfare is emotionally demanding and often includes dealing with abrasive constituencies, animal abuse and neglect situations, and conversations about euthanasia. WCHS does not euthanize for length of stay or space and its annual euthanasia rate is under three percent. This role has the potential to grow and change as WCHS expands its programming. This position reports to the Executive Director.
